The Great IKEA Wardrobe Adventure
You ever look at a stack of flat-pack boxes and wonder what you’ve just agreed to?
That was me, standing in front of a mountain of IKEA boxes on a crisp Saturday morning.
Eight custom wardrobes, complete with glass sliding doors, soft-close drawers, hidden lights, and all the complexities you can imagine.
And here I was, armed with patience, precision, and a toolkit I’d trust my life with.
This was no ordinary project.
This was a challenge.
As I peeled back the cardboard and Styrofoam, I found an entire universe of parts: sliding door tracks, glass panels, lighting components, and a sea of screws. Every item had its place, but only if I did my job right.
First things first, organisation. It’s the unglamorous but crucial foundation of every project. I began by sorting out the pieces, dividing them into neat sections across the floor. I carefully grouped screws and brackets, keeping them within arm’s reach.
With everything sorted, it was time to start assembling the frames.
Challenge One: The Frame
Tall wardrobes, especially ones designed to reach the ceiling, demand perfect alignment. Just a millimeter off and the doors would catch, or worse, refuse to close. Here’s where my Bosch laser level GLL 2-15 G. came into play, casting that crisp green line across the wall like a guiding hand.
With the frames positioned, I reached for my torque wrench, a tool that gives me the power to lock everything in place with just the right amount of force. Once these wardrobes were secured, there’d be no wiggle room literally. Each frame was anchored, level, and ready to take on the weight of those sleek sliding doors.
And I can’t stress this enough: if you’re taking on a project of this size, invest in a good torque wrench. There’s no better feeling than knowing everything’s rock-solid, even before the doors go on.
Challenge Two: Hiding the cables
Next came the client’s biggest request: no visible cables. They wanted a lighting system that would illuminate every time a door opened and each drawer pulled out, but they didn’t want a single wire in sight. Challenge accepted.
I planned every cable run like a map, outlining paths along the inside of each frame. But I wasn’t just mapping precision was everything.
My Fluke voltage tester was a constant companion, helping me ensure that every line would be safe, discreet, and functional. I measured each cable length, clipped and stripped each end with my Milwaukee wire strippers, and kept everything as snug and hidden as possible.
Then there was that one rogue cable. No matter how many times I tried, it seemed determined to peek out where it shouldn’t. I almost laughed at the stubbornness of it.
But, remembering the wise words of Sir John, my old mentor
“Why rush when great work lives in the details?”
I took a breath, re-routed it, and checked it once more.
Challenge Three: The glass sliding doors
And then, it was time for the main event the glass doors. Floor-to-ceiling panels that were as delicate as they were daunting.
Each piece was like a polished mirror, perfectly cut but heavy enough to give me a good workout. Here, precision was non-negotiable. If I dropped one of these or even nudged it wrong, it was all over.
I assembled the frames for the glass, using my Bosh multi-bit screwdriver to secure every edge and corner.
Then, holding my breath, I lifted each door into place. It took every bit of strength, along with the help of a suction grip clamp to hold them steady as I maneuvered them onto the tracks.
Once they were secured, I adjusted them with my Draper precision screwdriver, moving each just a millimeter at a time until they slid without a hitch.
The moment I gave each door a test slide smooth, quiet, with the soft-close mechanism working like a charm was a moment of pure satisfaction.
The Final Touches: The Drawers
Drawers can seem simple, but when they’re part of a complex build like this, every piece matters. I aligned the tracks with my Makita cordless drill, making sure they were level and secure.
The lighting system was designed to switch on automatically when each drawer opened, and I couldn’t afford to have a single wire out of place.
As I pulled open the first drawer and saw the soft light glow from within, I knew every second of effort was worth it. This was craftsmanship done right, with no compromises.
The Big Reveal
With everything assembled, aligned, and double-checked, I took a step back to admire the finished product.
The wardrobes looked like something out of a high-end showroom: sleek glass doors, subtle lighting, drawers that glowed from within. When the client walked in, their face lit up first in shock, then in sheer joy.
That’s the moment that makes it all worth itthe look that says, “This is better than I imagined.”
Before packing up, I gave everything one last test. Every door glided smoothly, every drawer lit up without fail, and every cable was perfectly hidden. I packed up my tools, left the room spotless, and walked out knowing I’d turned a mountain of flat-pack boxes into a seamless, beautiful addition to their home.
This project was a true test of skill, patience, and problem-solving. From taming the glass sliding doors to hiding the cables, each step was a challenge but in the end, it came together as a beautiful, seamless design.
